Kim Mukee’s solo exhibit Save My Friend! Somewhere between changing and unchanging
Artist Kim Mukee has a solo exhibition titled Save My Friend! in ten years. He has continued to work on sculptures with the theme of trees. The shape of naturally bent trees has been transplanted to his sculptures. With materialistic change from wood to metal, and conceptualization from objective trees to an abstract shape, trees and humans slightly communicated each other in his pieces. In the subtle mood, dramatic communion would spring up.

The artist was born in 1962, in Jecheon where, Koreans say, the clear wind blows and the bright moon comes up. Traditionally two sceneries have been loved in Korea: the scenery of the sea and mountains and the scenery of rivers and mountains. It has been said that Mt. Geumgang (the Diamond Mountains) by the East Sea is the best among the sceneries of the sea and mountains and four towns have the best sceneries of rivers and mountains. The four scenic towns were Cheongpung, Danyang, Yeongchun and Yeongwol. Kim was born and played about there. Clear water, the fresh wind and deep forests were his friends, and he developed empathy and affection for every life in Nature. Every true artist has the sense of the original form. The sense of the original form is the emotion having depth and width that an artist learned by experience and by interacting with the world since childhood. Kim’s original form is the wind and forests and water. Trees were swaying in the wind in his forest and the forest was full of fresh scent. The streams in the woods cooled down his body and led him to the unknown future.

He wanted to be a writer when he was a child. He would sing poems and write novels from stories. He often won prizes from writing contests and his family praised his writings. When he became a high school student, he had to walk many hours to his school in another town from his town, Cheongpung. Walking by the lakeside in the soft moonlight on the way back home, he drew the Moon and at the moment he was starting his life as an artist. He by himself made sketches of the beautiful night scenes of the four towns on the way home, and briefly learned molding skills from his school friends. Based on the experience, he entered College of Fine Art at Seoul National University without much difficulty. The artist remembers he engraved on his mind the Confucius’s saying “to find the truth from one’s body and from each object (近取諸身, 遠取諸物).” He continued to practice drawing, often about human bodies, and went to mountains like Gwanak, Surak and Cheongye. He appeared to be intensely interested in every interaction and communication between humans, mountains and forests (Nature).

The artist is deeply interested in Swiss anthropologist, J. J. Bachofen. Bachofen said the first form of human marriage is Hetärismus (hetaerism), meaning open sex, in his book Das Mutterrecht (Mother Right). Hetärismus was the type of marriage to primitive humans. The number of population was the key to survival back then; the higher number meant the higher possibility for survival. Thus, mothers had power when fathers of children were not known. When people came down from mountains and started living in tribes, new forms of marriage like group marriage and paring families appeared. Both types were substituted to monogamy as civilization became complicated. The word “father” was born with the birth of language. Language gave birth to learning. The memory about Mother is instinct but that of Father is learned. Language was born on the way to monogamy from Hetärismus. Verbal thinking gives birth to historical thinking. A narrative consists of a subject and a predicate. The subject is “I” and the predicate includes facts and feelings about other objects that are not “me.” History is the narrative of human times when the subject and the predicate met. Therefore, father-right is the power in history and mother-right is the power before history. Mythology was created not in villages but in mountains. History happens in villages. Mythology happens in mountains. Kim Mukee tried to catch mythology into his sculptures. Mythology is not mere fantasy; it is the story that lives and flows in unconsciousness. It is the instinctive human memory.

“A myth is the annotation about a symbol that indicates something.” This sentence summarizes Bachofen’s theory. Mankind did not have knowledge about the world in the beginning. They just gained vague and subtle feelings while meeting the exterior world. They might have expressed the feelings through articulation, songs and motions. They also might have wanted their community to collectively understand and pass down it, and for the purpose they created the symbolic system. They started to interpret the symbols to check if the symbols are correct. The interpretation is mythology. Kim thought that forests are the origin to understand the primitive human life. Thus, trees, which compose of a forest, had to be the main theme to him. Trees are the medium through which humans can reach the key from the earth. Trees are vertical and, thus, they make the opposite image to that of the horizontal earth. The horizontal earth is the stage that humans came out to relatively late, and mankind lived in forests and above trees in the beginning. There was no concept of time when humans lived above the vertical trees. Time was given to them when they came down to the earth. The sun, day and night, four seasons and subdivisions of seasons, and agriculture inspired humans to create the concept of time. Therefore, horizontal time is ordinary time and vertical time is transcendent time. We still depend on trees, mountains and forests to meet God, transcend or reach nirvana, out of everyday lives. It is because trees, mountains and forests awakes the vertical time carved inside us.

Artist Kim’s the early wooden sculptures are classified into two series: Murmuring Tree series and Talking Tree series. He made stiff tension by casting and cutting the shape of a tree bending and sprawling. At the same time, the sounds of a forest and Nature, and the images of a forest and Nature were murmuring. The sound that a forest makes when it sways in the wind was a myth. The poetic reaction of the first humans to the world was a myth, and admiration of the mythical life and nostalgia are Kim’s themes. The original human characters were not violence in disorder or deception when mythology was the principle of the world. Humans were good-natured and satisfactory; they were just being natural. There was no such morality as coercion and a rule. As the sun rises and the water flows, humanity was good and happy. When language was divided into many and humans got the horizontal way of thinking and the concept of time, humans fell out from Nature; this is “ex-sist.” Ex-sist had humans think one is different from one another as soon as they got separated from Nature. Now, civilization was accelerated and personal success became a more important virtue than stability in community. Peace became struggle, and community spirit was substituted with personal interests. Kim faced the course of human history. With his Murmuring Tree series from the early 2000, he represented the human history where humans continued to confront the world or made harmony with it. In 2012, he entered a different phase.

The sculptor loves children and so smiles seeing them. However, watching children lose home and wounded during the Syrian civil war in 2012, he made up mind to actively talk about the reality where we are living. The “friend” in the exhibition’s title Save My Friend! means the awakened mind by the little Syrian refugees. Awakened mind is the attitude to seriously and mindfully see all problems in our world. Kim made drawings everyday. He dealt in his drawings with wars, starvation, disease, life and death, love and hatred, ecology, ethnicity, freedom, soul, the universe, and God. He finally reached two fundamental principles after working on the drawings for 5 years. The principle of the universe is not separated from the phenomenal world (體用不二). In addition, the principle of the universe is inevitably reflected in the human history

We can often see in the exhibition taken-off human masks and crows. Among many layers of meanings that human masks and crows might have, here is the nicest interpretation. All of us are struggling in our lives. There cannot be only happiness all the time. We experience sadness more than happiness, and we cannot get over our problems causing sadness. We often try to find a solution from something stronger than us like political power or capital. At the same time, we want something permanent: science and God. The western culture is based on external transcendence that is represented by science and God. Asian culture is based on immanent transcendence meaning morality and virtue are given to humans. “I” am the only one who can see it. Crows symbolize external transcendence. Taken-off masks symbolize immanent transcendence that goes to find the fundamental self out of the self stained with habits of agony. The artist says we can find a new model to lead the future when we maximize the advantages of the different civilizations of the East and the West. That is the reason why Kim picked up Asian brushes and ink rather than pencils that he was more used to.

Sculptures of humans, trees and cats in the exhibition were made by 3D printers. Made of filaments and silicon, the pieces highlight pure white image. It is very meaningful to show our history, which experienced many layers of rises and falls, with the beauty of pure white. It tells mankind, Nature and animals and plants were all pure and innocent in the begging. As Gaston Bachelard mentioned, trees are the symbol of vertical time. Vertical time is the transcendent time, and mankind and cats are the symbols of horizontal time, in other words, symbols of everyday life. Ordinary time can be transformed in two cases: when meeting God or meeting art. Here is the important fact. The two opportunities never exist outside of us. We must find it in ourselves. In ourselves, we can find divine time and meet artistic time. The title Save My Friend! not only means that we should solve all human problems but also says in a more sophisticated and subtle way that we should find true us. The message makes me look forward to seeing Kim’s future work.
