Reinforced Sharing of Aesthetic Perspectives through the Physical Merger of Visual Images
《Transfer Korea-NRW》 has been a precious chance for fourteen artists, six organizers, and numerous critics participating in the program from both Korea and Germany to cultivate a wide range of knowledge and creative competence through mutual interchange and discussion. In other words, Transfer is designed to be a project that revolves around its process, rather than the final result. And we will witness the outcome of all stages of this process through the exhibition and its concurrent publication. From October 2013, the three institutions in Germany draw the curtains of their exhibitions in succession, and the exhibitions in the three Korean institutions open on the same day in December.

Among the fourteen artists, the Alternative Space LOOP accommodates the work of Erika Hock, Manuel Graf, Yeondoo Jung, Yeesookyung, and Kyungah Ham. They share no conceptual footing. In the exhibition, the LOOP will showcase artworks of different themes and media, as each artist has dug into different subject matters throughout their careers. The exhibition at the LOOP gains its uniqueness, even if in an ironic way, through the very absence of conceptual frame, in that it puts forward the physical merger of varied works without concealing the coercive power of curatorship.

Getter Robo (ゲッターロボ), a Japanese animation directed by Tomoharu Katsumata and initially aired in 1974, introduced the Super Robot genre to television viewers, featuring a gigantic robot transformable and also separable into multiple sub-robots. Getter Robo has three pilots, each of whom owns dissimilar personality and taste. Even though the protagonist of the show is Ryoma Nagare, the pilot of Getter 1, Hayato Jin and Musashi Tomoe who operate Getter 2 and 3 respectively also play significant roles beyond being mere supporting characters. In ordinary circumstances each pilot operates their own robot in fighting against enemies, but when it meets the moment of crisis they demonstrate the mighty power by combining their units into one body.

The LOOP stars in this Transfer exhibition as Dr. Saotome, who invented the robot; the pilot of Getter 1 would be Erika Hock and Manuel Graf; Yeondoo Jung, Yeesookyung, and Kyungah Ham fill the part of the rest pilots. Just like the robot Getter 1, Erika Hock searches for ways to incorporate her work with others. For example, her work consists of partitions, which serve as the screen for other artists’ projection installation or as the apparatus that divides and connects workspaces of other artists. Nonetheless, her partitions express the creator’s own identity through its formative quality alongside its functionality. That the artist is often inclined to employ translucent fabric and mirror as the main material of her work hints at a thoughtful consideration on the part of the artist to forge effective cohesion between her work and others by letting their intrinsic images to be reflected at or penetrating her work without distortion. In doing so, the work of Erika Hock not only saves the originality of other artworks, but also extends itself by producing brand new originality through the amalgamation between hers and others’ images. It is neither the philosophical method of thesis-antithesis-synthesis, nor the mathematical equation of 1+1=2. Rather will it be an extension of the spiritual sort prompted by the nexus of materials, as it is for the augmented body of Getter Robo that maintains the characteristics of each sub-party even after the combination.

The same explanation can be applied to Manuel Graf who incorporates others’ works into his own. Through digital conversion of two-dimensional works made by other artists, he inserts into the appreciation and interpretation of those works another functional point of view that anchors in his own aesthetic scope. For instance, he represents other artists’ flat works as in digital visual and produces promotion videos, which demonstrate the aesthetic construction of his work and, at the same time, deliver the effect of publicity. His work carries the identity of its creator and those of other artists as well in one body in so far as it adds another function to the original works. Such a tactic mimics one of the transformations of Getter Robo, which has Getter 3 as its main pilot, not Getter 1, when it needs to fight under water, rather than in the sky.

As constituent bodies of Getter Robo, Yeondoo Jung, Yeesookyung, and Kyungah Ham will intensify the complexity of image unfolded in the exhibition by aggregating their own functions with the works by other artists. This kind of combination or integration method cannot be defined as collaboration popular these days, in which many artists work together under a common theme, nor the typical form of group show, which enumerate artworks around the centripetal issue.

Growing Complexity of Social System in the 21st Century and Our Questions

The evolution of robotic mechanism from a single body into a transformable and incorporable multiunit system assumes the sophistication of its functions and structure. To combine individual units not only aggrandizes the combat power of robots and the radius of their activity, but also requires more money and constant complication of the basic system for maintaining the machinery. As a matter of fact, in Getter Robo three pilots often conflict with each other even in a life or death situation in the battle zone. Nevertheless, the progress from a single body robot, represented by Mazinger Z, into a combinable super robot is the advancement towards a society of more developed scientific technology. (These days any of robot animation series takes for granted the ability of transformation and combination no matter how many pilots the robot requires.)

In the midst of globalization, our society in the 21st Century has become more and more complex. Socio-economic system and norms never cease getting differentiated and specialized, and they tend to reflect and define each other from diversified angles. In this process multilayered and multipolar relations have been woven. Joseph A. Tainter points out that the higher a society advances the bigger it becomes and the more complex system it requires to sustain itself. He argues that history of civilizations that repeats the fall of one and the rise of another has been driven by the ability of each society to resolve the problem of complication that accompanies its development. In a book titled The Watchmen’s Rattle, Rebecca D. Costa warns about urgent problems caused by the irredeemably growing discrepancy between the slow evolution of mankind and the rapid development of society. According to her, a civilization is subjected to the danger of collapse when it hits a gridlock called the “cognitive threshold,” which means a society could no longer understand its critical problems and fails to come up with solutions.

How may men and their society be capable of overcoming the threat of complexity? Living in the modernized society and civilization of unprecedented complexity, our contemporaries in the 21st Century are relentlessly chasing after the idea of continuous development. Will this ever-growing complication bring an apocalypse to mankind or progress and development that lead to utopia? Solutions to move forward to progress, not to destruction, are three.

First solution can be learned from Steve Jobs. It is the strategy of technological simplification, which streamlines diverse communicative relations in society as Jobs rendered down technological complexity through conversion and concealed it under the intuitive yet consistent design and interface. To elaborate, it is to simplify crowded environment and society radically and rearrange all digital settings in a human centered order, without jeopardizing the openness, communication, and sharing between cultures.

Second solution is the one suggested by Rebecca Costa, who highlights the potentiality of insight, thinking, and concentration that can settle the conundrum of complexity. It is to increase our ability to deal with complexity by deriving profound insight out of optimistic and positive atmosphere and relaxed state of mind. Good examples of this solution can be found in our ordinary life, such as taking a short break, doing yoga or meditation, or going for a walk.

Third is the biological evolution of mankind, as proposed by Marshall McLuhan. This idea hopes for a renewed capacity of humankind to cope with increasing complexity as a result of the extension and evolution of human sense into more synesthetic and multisensory one.

Among these three solutions, the first approaches the societal complicatedness in external environment that surrounds us in it suggestion to simplify technological systems of communication, whereas the second and the third focuses on spiritual world internal or intrinsic to our existence, which we can return to or explore by ourselves.

The Transfer Korea-NRW exhibition at the LOOP adopts the system of Getter Robo animation. The system of super robot bears a valid lesson for us in its emphasis on the internal evolution of mankind, parallel to the third of the aforementioned solutions, not the alteration of external surroundings. The exhibition will assemble the works of participating artists physically. This is a curatorial experiment that raises the following questions: Whether will the fighting power of each artist increase or diminish when their works are put together in somewhat artificial manner? After combined into one body, will each individual work be equipped with other combat skills without losing the distinct identity and function of their own? How will the viewers accept such complexity?

The new paradigm of the 21st Century increases complexity by differentiating not only systems or norms of a society, but also values of humanity and relationships with the others. How will our identity expand and change, when the self of a unified identity is forced to have relationships with myriad of the others? The exhibition will serve as a small experimental adventure in this critical juncture of our time when novel concepts like hyper sociality or multifaceted persona are introduced to the definition of human identity in the 21st Century.
